Should our dogs be included in our wedding?
For many of us, our dogs are more than just pets. They are family members. We consider ourselves fur-parents and them our fur-babies. So of course, when it comes time for family photos or big life events like getting married, we want the dogs to be included. It would be wrong to leave them out, right? Or would it? The answer to this question is not so straight forward.
As an animal lover and the owner of a photography company, LaVonda Gale Photography, I will always selfishly vote that you include the dogs. They are so fun, entertaining, and add variety to your photos. All great reasons to bring them. You should take the time to consider a few things first before deciding to include them:
Your Stress Level - Adding the dogs means having more individuals to get ready, keep up with, and prepare for, so adding them to the photos can add another layer of stress that could have otherwise be avoided.
Your Patience - Working with animals is very different than working with people. It usually requires multiple takes of the same action before the photographer gets the desired shot; therefore, you will need to be patient and remain calm throughout the process. Otherwise, your dogs will feed off of your energy and things can start to spiral.
Your Dog's Temperament - Dogs have different personalities and energy levels. You should consider if your dog will be able to behave in an acceptable manner when placed in the desired circumstance. If you don't think they can, what harm might this cause and are you willing to risk the consequences?
The Environment of the Event - Does the area allow dogs and will it be accommodating to your dogs needs or abilities? Could your dogs be stressed or distracted by things in that environment?
Your Dog's Necessities - If you bring the dogs, there will be a few other things that you need to bring along and is that too much to deal with? At minimum, you will need leashes, water, and poop baggies. But you may also want to bring treats, food, toys, and a person to be responsible for them when you're not holding onto the leash. And some dogs may require medicine or other special accessories.
Traveling - Is there enough room in the car to bring the dogs and all their accessories? (For weddings) Where are the dogs going and who is going to be responsible for them after the event?
WHEN IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO INCLUDE THE DOGS
Like family members, dogs have their own unique personalities, abilities, and restrictions. All of these things should be taken into account when deciding to include them in your photos. If all proper accommodations can be made and it's not too much for you to handle, include the dogs. But if you decide to make things less complicated and simply leave them at home, don't feel bad. Trust your instincts and decide whatever feels right to you. Your dogs are still going to love you either way. What else would you expect from man's best friend?
