Ways to Incorporate God in Your Wedding Day
In the Bible, a wedding signifies a sacred, public covenant ordained by God between one man and one woman, uniting them as "one flesh" (Genesis 2:24). It represents a lifelong commitment, mirroring the love between Christ and the church. As a Christian, there are many ways you can incorporate God and celebrate your faith on your wedding day.
Prayer
This one seems obvious, but what may be less obvious is all the ways and moments that prayer can be incorporated.
- You can have silent prayer where you thank God for your circumstance or ask Him to calm your nerves.
- There can be circle prayer where loved ones gather around you, hold hands or lay hands on you as you all pray together.
- During the ceremony, you can have communion and give them wedding bands to the guests as they pass them around and speak blessings over them.
- Before dinner is served, have someone pray over the food and the marriage.
- During the reception, ask guests to write down a prayer that will encourage you during tough times in your marriage and collect them all in a box.
- Utilize the exit at the end of the event to create a tunnel of prayer. Instead of your guest holding sparklers, ask them to create a tunnel and hold up their hands and say a prayer as you walk through to exit the venue.
Recite Scripture
Most couples will have the officiant read a passage from the Bible about love or marriage during the ceremony. Corinthians 13:4-8 is the most probably the most popular. More creative ways to incorporate scripture is to put it in your details. Use your imagination here, but a few ideas include the following: a pendant hanging from your bouquet, embroider it on a handkerchief or article of clothing, print it on napkins or on a sign.
Foot Washing
Opt for foot washing during the ceremony. Just as Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, you too can wash the feet of your spouse. It is an example of humility, salvation, and a command to serve.
Let your Bible be Your Guest Book
Have your guest sign your bible or highlight their favorite passages for you.
Praise Music
The Bible tells us that where two or more gather, He is there. Play praise music at your reception. Praise God and be grateful for the people he has placed in your lives and your circumstance.
Speak the Gospel
Chances are, there will be at least one guest that either does not know Jesus or hasn't decided to trust in him as their Lord and savior. Speak about Jesus and leave room somewhere in the day to invite others to be saved who are not already. I most often see this during the ceremony, but it could fit seamlessly into a reception as well.
